How to identify Neutral terminal of a Three phase Transformer?
The Three phase Distribution transformers normally have Delta connection on Primary Side and Star Connection on the secondary Side. The incoming HT line is connected on the three terminals of Primary and the outgoing LT cables are connected on the four terminals (Three phase + 1 neutral) on Secondary Side.
While installation of such Distribution Transformer, it is very common that the installer is not aware of the Exact location of the Secondary Neutral terminal ,and because of this confusion,he may interchange either of the phases with the neutral. This leads to some electrical accidents and damages.
Let us understand this matter and avoid this confusion by a simplest thumb rule.
Anywhere in India,if you stand in front of the Secondary facing the LT side of a Distribution Transformer, the Right most Terminal is the Neutral terminal. The second terminal from the right is the R phase, third is the Y phase and then the left most terminal (Fourth from the right) is the B phase.
In short,to identify the Neutral terminal of a distribution transformer,Go to the Secondary side of the transformer. While facing the LT terminals.the right most terminal is Neutral terminal.
